One Night Without a Home

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH

5:30 pm – 6:30 am

Tuesday, November 18, the first-ever "One Night Without a Home" will get underway. The Smith County Coalition for the Homeless is sponsoring the event as part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, November 17 – 21. This national endeavor is designed to promote education, action, and awareness about hunger and homelessness.

The 13-hour event includes dinner among the homeless, a homelessness march, a "Faces of Homelessness Forum.", entertainment, a homeless breakfast, and lessons learned. The Faces of Homelessness forum provides an opportunity for dialogue between homeless or formerly homeless persons with those who want to learn more about homelessness.

The evening begins at 5:30 pm with dinner at Salvation Army. >From there, participants will march from Salvation Army to Bergfeld Park (1.5 miles). The Faces of Homelessness Forum begins at 7:30 p.m. with a proclamation from City of Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass and guest speakers such as a homeless mother of five living in Tyler, Sonya Henson, Director of Hope Haven for Women, Lisa Godfrey, Director of Residential Services, Salvation Army, Tyler, a homeless man living in Athens, Rev. Tony Chung, Director of East Texas Rescue Mission of Tyler and remarks from Christina Fulsom, Executive Director of PATH.
Entertainment will follow and those who wish to spend the night will remain until the following morning. If temperature is expected to go below 40 degrees, participants will walk back to the Salvation Army and sleep in emergency shelter.

The following morning, at 5 am the Salvation Army Canteen will provide breakfast."Lessons learned" facilitated by Derrick Choice, Public Health Improvement Coordinator, TDSHS, will follow. Around 6:30 a.m., the participants will march from Bergfeld Park to the Salvation Army.

Security will be provided. This awareness event is for anyone interested in learning more about the serious issues of hunger and homelessness and how to address them. For information please call 903.533.5211 or 903.597.4044 x107.
